What don’t people understand about the difference between the fiddle and the violin?
The violin and the fiddle were two completely separate instruments! The fiddle had a thumb string and drone strings like the Norwegian hardingfele and the Icelandic videl and many other such folk instruments. The violin is descended from the Spanish vihuela that could either be plucked or bowed, as well as the renaissance rebec. Yet I answer the question and two spineless worms tell me that I get the thumbs down! I challenge whoever reads this to check my facts – the violin and the fiddle were not the same instrument!
Nowadays, fiddle and violin means the same just like a guitarist gets his AXE out to play. He is not talking about an axe to chop wood either.
The term fiddle may refer to any bowed string musical instrument, including the violin. Fiddle playing, or fiddling, refers to various styles of music.
