How does playing all the major and minor scales and and arpeggios work in a live audition for music school?
I’m interested in attending the Colburn School in LA or the Curtis Institute of Music in Pennsylvania. All 24 major and minor 3-octave scales and arpeggios are required. What is it like to do this in the live audition? Do you just start with G major, play its scales and arpeggios, then move on to the next major scale (basically, is there a certain order that must be followed)? And what is the expected metronomic speed to play the scales/ arpeggios? What are the judges looking for in your scales/arpeggios? I know this sounds a bit obsessive, but I have been playing the violin for 10 years and really want to get into one of these two schools, and I have no idea of what to expect at the auditions. I mean, I know what repertoire is required, but I’ve never done an audition for music school before, and am a bit unsure of what it will be like. Any comments/suggestions are extremely appreciated.
its horrible, i had to do this as well as 3 audition pieces when i auditioned for the Royal Academy of Music where there where a panel of 5 people including the head of violin studies. how it works is that you paly the G maj scale 1 octave then g maj arrpeggio, then to 2 moctaves then move on to to D then A and so on through the circle of fifths. this effectivly shows (in my case profficancy in string crossings). metronomic speed is up to you, but it was generally compoound time or 4:4 time the best thing you can do is practise all your scales/arpeggios both 1 and 2 octaves and then just go for it. once you do it you’ll find a whole wide world open to yuo. put tit this way i’ve now been with the LSO for 11 years!!! its soo worth it
