What should be the teaching plan or method for teaching poem to grade 5?
I want to know the method for teaching poems.
For examples:The road not taken by Robert frost.
Break,break,break by Tennyson.
Basically,I intend to know how should the lesson start and end, what methods can be used, what activities can be given etc.
There is no such thing as “the” method to teach poems…. this might be a stupid question, but haven´t you been introduced to a variety of teaching methods during your studies….?
You can only chose a method if you know which poem you are dealing with and what your class is like. Are they rather studious? Are they kids who need some action going to work with you? Can they focus over a longer period of time or are they still rather child-like? Etc.
I think “Break, Break, Break” is not such a great poem to start with in year 5. Pick one that describes a scene or situation with different people involved, read the poem out to your pupils and ask everyone to draw a picture showing that scene. You will end up with a variety of pictures, because poems cause different mental images in different people´s minds. You could also pick a poem with lots of adjectives in it and give it to pupils after having erased all adjectives. Have them fill in the blanks in a way that makes sense to them. Discuss the options and then, look at the original poem. Talk about why this author picked these adjectives. How does using the adjectives the author picked alter your notion of this poem?
Another great method is reading the poem out, then have pupils simply talk about associations they have. What feelings do they have when hearing this, how do they imagine the scene described? What did they get from this poem? Then hand out copies and have them look at the poem. Read it at least once more. Make them pick particular words or phrases that caused a particular feeling in them. For instance, “there are a lot of words in this poem that have to do with feeling sad” etc. This way, you have them “discover” the language of poems themselves. They notice how language can be used to create something artistic, to express feelings, thoughts etc. They will find different “methods” different authors make use of to express what they want to say. Poems can rhyme and be written in stanzas, the more traditional ones are – that gives the poem a rhythm, make them clap to this rhythm and tell you what would change if somebody wrote the same words in a text instead of in rhyming stanzas etc.
There are lots and lots of things to do with poems. I would always start off with rather simple and easily accessible ones, then move over to more sophisticated ones. Have them write poems themselves, giving them a couple of key words to include in the poem. Variety is the key.
