Do I need to cover the hot spot after I use Sulfodene?
It doesn’t specify on the bottle that I need to cover the hot spot to prevent my dog from licking the area, but I was wondering if I should. I know it is best to cover it to keep him from scratching at it, but I haven’t had a chance to buy any vet wrap and was wondering if I should do something else in the mean time. Thanks!
no, leave it open. otherwise moisture builds up under the wrap & just exacerbates the problem. sulfadene helps dry it out, which is needed. it’s a pretty good product in general, for an OTC one. just don’t cover or wrap it. your dog likely won’t bother it since it tastes pretty bad. if he does, put some lemon juice or tobasco sauce near the hot spot on the fur (but not anywhere it could actually touch the skin & sting).
on a side note, tea does the same thing. make a strong pot of tea, then let it cool. soak a rag in it and put it on the hot spot. the tannic acid in it helps relieve inflammation & itching, plus it helps dry it up a bit.
if it doesn’t start to get better in a few days, or if it cracks & bleeds or peels, bring him in to the vet. he may be fighting something like a secondary bacterial infection as well.
